"The measure of any society is how it treats its most vulnerable members" ...children.

FORTHCOMING PROJECT

"HOSTAGE OF THE STATE is the follow up to THE JAMMED."

In 2018, while filming a documentary in South Australia, writer-director Dee McLachlan met a mother whose story would change the course of her life.  Dee devoted the next eight years to working almost entirely on a pro bono basis—advocating for families and children. Along the way, she published over 120 investigative articles, produced a video series, and wrote The Child Protection Racket.

Through this work, Dee came to believe Australia was witnessing a modern revival of the Stolen Generations—children separated from their families by systems that operate beyond public scrutiny.

Convinced these stories could no longer remain hidden, she returned to cinema. Hostage of the State distils eight years of investigation into a feature film drawn from true accounts of three families and her lived experience.

An invitation for Australia to question and decide for itself.

THE JAMMED 2007

At the Movies

The Jammed was inspired by the true accounts of women and girls, some as young as 14, trafficked into Melbourne's sex industry. When discovered, many were detained and deported instead of being treated as victims. Dee believed she had confronted one of society's darkest injustices. She was wrong.
